Defining an assessment for ICT sustainability

In the form of best practices, much knowledge already exists to improve the sustainability of organizations (e.g. that of data centers, companies, government, etc.). Sustainability assessments are a precondition to determine the sustainability level of an organization. They indicate what could be improved, which best practices exist, and how they could be applied. Creating such assessments requires the knowledge of many different experts and is a difficult task. The objective of the workshop is to combine the knowledge of the participants from academia, business and industry in order to develop an ICT-related sustainability assessment, which will then be published in the form of a public, free, interactive web application.

The workshop will be led by the Green IT Special Interest Group (SIG) of the Swiss Informatics Society, which has developed a generic web based assessment application. By filling out a questionary, interested persons can assess the maturity of their organization compared to best practices on a given topic. Currently, one questionary has been developed for data centers; it can be found on the Green IT SIG website. During this workshop, we will create another questionary. The assessment may either target a specific audience (e.g. assessing the sustainability of ICT workplaces in small enterprises) or a specific topic such as sustainable software development.
